The Abbeyfield Society is a national not-for-profit community housing provider, headquartered in Doncaster East, Victoria, that operates around 25 shared independent-living houses across the ACT, NSW, SA, Tasmania and Victoria. Each Abbeyfield house is an ordinary home rather than an institution, typically accommodating up to 10–11 residents who each have a private bedroom and ensuite while sharing communal lounge, dining and garden areas. It supports people over 55 who can live independently but want the company and security of shared accommodation, as well as some houses for younger adults with mild intellectual disabilities. A live-in housekeeper prepares two main meals on weekdays (one on weekends) and cleans the communal areas, while residents manage their own personal care, laundry and room. Fees are based on the resident's pension, rent assistance and energy supplement, and the model is expressly aimed at people who do not need an assisted-living or residential aged care home.
